There was once a young porcupine that dreamed of being a big movie star. He lived in the woods with his father and mother. Everyday he would act and sing while his father would work and do the things that porcupines do. The father was very embarrassed of his son. Friends of the family would ask about the young porcupine but the father would never answer. The father wanted his son to be like a normal porcupine but alas that would not happen.
On day the young porcupine told his mother and father that he was leaving for the city. Without a moments hesitation the father unleashed his thoughts that had been building for quite some time.
“You will fail! Porcupines cannot act! We are not meant to work with the creatures that stand on two legs. You will fail and you will die alone,” said the father. Upon hearing this the young porcupine’s determination grew even bigger.
“You are wrong father, I will become the greatest actor ever, just like the great William Shatner and Ed The Horse,” proclaimed the young porcupine.
“You do not speak his name in my house!” said the father with fire in his eyes.
“Goodbye father,” said the young porcupine as he walked out of the home he had known his whole life. It was a days journey to the city, but that was on foot and the young porcupine had connections. He was best friends with the dodo bird.
“Dodo, can you give me a ride to the city?” asked the young porcupine.
“Hmmm….” thought the dodo. “Well sure, I will just cancel the rest of my appointments for the day.” The dodo bird was the local gynecologist and had many female animal patients. “Anything for you little porc,” confessed the dodo. So the young porcupine and dodo set off for the city and within two hours they had arrived.
“Here we are little buddy,” said the dodo.
“Thank you so much,” said the young porcupine.
“Ok now, and remember to always use protection, “said the dodo as he flew away. The young porcupine had no idea what that meant.
The city was filled with desire and very tall buildings. Constant noise polluted the air, people talking and screaming, car horns going off all around. A big smile grew on the young porcupines face as he wiggled down the street. People would stop and stare at the young porcupine but he paid not attention to them. While being in a new place can be fun and exciting the young porcupine needed to get down to business. He found a local newspaper and checked the classifieds. There were not many acting jobs but enough the fill the day. The young porcupine then set his sights on his first audition.
The young porcupine arrived at the audition full of charisma and confidence. That was until he was the competition. He was the only “animal” auditioning. The other actors looked at him and laughed. Just like hearing his father’s words, this only made the young porcupine want the part more. Soon the young porcupine was called into the audition room. He wiggled his way through the door and stood looking at the panel of casting directors. All of a sudden a huge burst of laughter came from the panel.
“What do you think you are doing here?” laughed one of them.
“A porcupine, this must be a joke!” Howled another one. This greatly upset the porcupine but nevertheless he began his monologue. As he acted the laughter started to die down and one by one the panel began to watch the young porcupine. They couldn’t believe what they were seeing. There was no doubt about it the young porcupine could act and was very gifted. The young porcupine ended his monologue and a moment of silence filled the air. There was nothing said for a long time and then one of the panel spoke up, “can you sing?” Like a rocket taking off the young porcupine busted into his favorite song, Black or White by Michael Jackson. There was not a dry eye in the room as all the panel had broke down. The young porcupine was not sure what he had done to make everyone cry so he himself began to cry. One of the panel members stood up from their seat and walked over the young porcupine, bent down and hugged him. During this hug many of the young porcupines quills cut into the panel members body but he did not care. The pain of having hundreds of sharp quills puncturing his skin could not break his happiness.
“We have found the next great American actor,” proclaimed the panel member. All the panel began the cheer and clap. The young porcupine could not believe his ears, for he was now an actor and the best. “A bright future awaits you,” said one of the panel members, not the one with the quills stuck in him.
There was no acting job that the young porcupine couldn’t handle. As word spread of his great talent many roles came his way. He only selected the most prestigious and vigorous roles to play hoping to one day win an academy award.
But alas the Academy of Motion Picture and Sciences vowed to never give an award to and animal, no matter how amazing their performance may be. Upon hearing this the young porcupine was crushed and went into hiding. He spent many a days wandering around the city searching for the key that would get him the award he always dreamed of. It haunted him to the point of no end. He couldn’t sleep nor could he do the usually things that porcupines do. Then one day while eating some baby carrots he came up with an idea, a way to achieve his award.
Some would say it was ludicrous what he was attempting to do and a few were for it but mostly people did not approve of what the young porcupine was going to do, he was going to turn himself into a human. Animal rights activates wept as they heard the statement given by the young porcupine, “I want to be a human.”
It had been nearly a year since the young porcupine had landed in the city. His quills had grown out a little bit more and he had gotten a tad bigger. He had gotten old enough to drop the young from his name and just be known as porcupine, but staying true to himself he remained the little porcupine. Fame had been kind to the young porcupine and he had raked in a lot of money in just one year. While some lead actors took months to do a movie the young porcupine could do it in just weeks. In one year alone he had released four films, all of the box office gold. There was no luxury the young porcupine could not have. From cars to homes he had it all, but he did not have his award.
On the day of his surgery he rang up his old friend dodo and told him what he was about to do. The dodo was neither upset nor happy he just said one thing, “Follow your dream and use protection.” The young porcupine now understood what the dodo meant when he said those words one year ago, and with that the young porcupine hung up the phone and went into the operating room.
It would be a understatement to say that the operation was a success, it was a miracle. The little porcupine had become a human. He had two legs and two arms. All of his quills had been removed and a few where placed on his head as hair. He was still the same size that he once was just now he walked standing up. The recovery process took weeks. He had to learn how to walk like a human, something he had never done before. After about two weeks he was able to remove the bandages. The young porcupine stood looking at himself in the mirror. He could not believe his eyes. A new face a new body, a new everything. He knew that he could not go by the name young porcupine any longer and to make himself a real human he needed a real human name. He decided to call him Danny Devito, and do this day he is still known as Danny Devito and many people in Hollywood believe that Danny was born a human but little do they know that he was once the young porcupine.
